W. J. Barron & Sons were a firm of Boot and Shoe Manufacturers and Dealers. They operated from: Eagle Shoe Mercery Works, This was an unofficial underprint, privately printed in black over the gum. The underprint is believed to have been used from around 1868 (as the earliest recorded plate is 113 which was put to press on 12th May 1868).
1868. Unofficial underprint type 1 (over the gum) in black . a) Vertical underprint, reading upwards PP1 1d lake-red
(SG 43 or G1)
b) Vertical underprint, reading downwards PP1A 1d lake-red (SG 43 or G1)
There are a number of later perfins that have been identified (provisionally in the case of W4540.01) as belonging to this firm.
