Smith, Elder & Co. were Publishers and East India Agents whose main offices were located at:

    65 Cornhill,
    London

The senior partner in the firm was a George Smith.  A portrait is shown below.

Smith, Elder & Co. published works by some of the most famous writers and authors of the day including William Makepeace Thackeray, Charlotte Bronte, Charles Darwin, Robert Browning, Elizabeth Gaskell, Arthur Conon Doyle and John Ruskin.

They had two consecutive entries in a Post Office Commercial Directory of 1865, which read:

“…east india army agents & bankers, 45 Pall mall SW; 4 White Lion court EC & 65 Cornhill EC”

and

“…publishers, home and export stationers & booksellers, east india army & colonial agents, 65 Cornhill EC; 4 White Lion court, Cornhill EC; 14 Bride lane, Fleet street EC; general printers, 15 ˝ Old Bailey EC, & label printers, Bishop’s court, Old Bailey EC”

Smith Elder & Co. also used Advertising Rings, some of which will be displayed here in the future.
